Building the Layers of Your DXF Export in OpenSolar
OpenSolar allows you to export your solar designs in .DXF (CAD) format, which includes three key layers: panels, facets, and obstructions. These layers are built using the Panels Tool, Roof Tool, and Obstruction Tool, each of which can be accessed via toolbar or hotkeys.
Layer Overview
| Layer | Tool Used | Hotkey | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Panels | Panels Tool | P | Defines PV layout, including pitch and racking |
| Facets | Roof Tool | R | Defines the roof geometry and surfaces |
| Obstructions | Obstruction Tool | O | Marks out vents, chimneys, skylights, etc. |
Activating Tools
Panels Tool is activated using the yellow "+ Panels" button in the upper-left corner of the map pane, next to the main control panel.
Roof Tool and Obstruction Tool are found in the Advanced Design Menu in the top-right corner of the map pane.
Use hotkeys (P, R, O) to quickly activate any tool from anywhere in the workspace.
Panels Tool (P)
Adding panels is a core step in your design workflow. Keep in mind:
In 3D Auto Mode, panels will automatically snap to the pitch of the roof.
In 2D Mode, you must manually enter the pitch in the design settings. Without doing so, the panel layout may not scale or align properly with the roof surface.
Roof Tool (R)
The Roof Tool lets you build the geometry of the roof using:
Nodes – Points placed to define edges
Edges – Lines connecting nodes
Facets – Closed surfaces formed by connected edges
This structure is essential for accurate shading and production modeling.
Obstruction Tool (O)
Use this tool to mark obstructions such as:
Vents
Chimneys
Skylights
HVAC units
Accurately modeling obstructions helps improve system performance estimates and shading analysis.
Exporting a DXF File
Once you’ve built all necessary layers (panels, facets, and obstructions):
Open the Advanced Menu in the upper-right corner of the map pane.
Click on “Download DXF (CAD file)” to export your design.
This will generate a .DXF file containing all design layers, compatible with CAD tools for further editing or plan set integration.
