This article explains how to input a customer's existing gas consumption data into an OpenSolar project. Following these steps allows you to establish a baseline of their current energy costs, which is crucial for demonstrating the whole-home financial savings of a new solar or electrically powered heating system.
Using the Natural Gas Usage & Rate Input Field
The Natural Gas Usage & Rate Input Field is where you can enter your customer's current natural gas usage and rate. You can find this information on one of your customer’s recent utility bills.
A. Set Units:
- Open your desired Project in OpenSolar.
- Navigate to the Energy tab.
- In the Natural Gas Usage & Rate section, select the appropriate units from the Unit Value dropdown.
Units Supported:
OpenSolar supports Therms, cubic feet, GJ, MMBTU, BTU, MJ or kWh units. For any other unit type, convert to one of the supported units using a conversion calculator.
B. Enter annual usage:
- Enter the Annual Usage in the units selected.
- Enter the annual gas bill in Annual - Price of Natural Gas. Include any taxes or system charges as well as the gas unit rate.
How we use the gas input data
Our platform uses the gas data you provide to calculate your Customer’s baseline gas costs. That is the customer's total current annual cost for gas heating and any gas powered appliances (e.g. hot water heating or cooking). This cost is displayed in the proposal's ‘Savings’ summary chapter.
