OpenSolar has two simulation engines that are used to calculate system output:
- PVWatts
- System Advisor Model (SAM)
You can learn more about them in this article
When designing in OpenSolar 3D, the System Advisor Model (SAM) is used. This engine requires additional module parameters to be entered in the control zone in order to make output calculations. If there are parameters missing from the module, you will see this error pop up in the studio zone when designing:
In the case above, the missing fields from this Hyundai module are imp, isc, noct, temp coefficient isc, and temp coefficient vpmax. These fields are displayed in within the module specifications in the control zone, here:
We have updated our database of modules to cater for these additional parameters, however, sometimes there may be the odd one that has not been updated on our end. In this case, you can send an email to 3D@opensolar.com, and ask us to update this for you.
However, most of the time this error will arise due to custom components. If you have created your own custom module before we released OpenSolar 3D, it is likely these parameters have not been entered. In this case, you will need to go to control > design & hardware > modules > edit the affected module > enter the missing specifications using the datasheet. Once these have been updated, you will no longer receive this error when trying to design in OpenSolar 3D.
